An approved inspection authority (AIA) is the separate company that monitors the air during an asbestos removal and issues the clearance certificate at the end. The Department of Employment and Labour’s May 2026 list has 54 AIAs approved for asbestos; on 12 October 2026, 33 of them were in date, able to issue clearance certificates and open to outside clients. 17 of those 33 are based in Gauteng and none in the Northern Cape.

What does an approved inspection authority do on an asbestos job?
Under the Asbestos Abatement Regulations, 2020, the asbestos client appoints an approved inspection authority (AIA) in writing before Type 2 or Type 3 work starts (regulation 11). The AIA co-signs the plan of work with the client and the registered contractor (regulation 15), monitors the air during the work (regulation 16), and at the end inspects the area, tests the air against the clearance indicator of 0.01 fibres per millilitre and issues the written declaration for the asbestos clearance certificate (regulation 22).
The AIA is a separate company from the contractor, and only the AIA can issue the clearance: the company that removed the asbestos never signs off its own job.
How many asbestos inspection authorities are there?
The Department’s May 2026 list has 59 approved inspection authorities for occupational health and hygiene. 54 are approved under the asbestos regulations, and 53 of those may issue clearance certificates. By 12 October 2026, 18 of the asbestos approvals on the list had passed their expiry date; some may have been renewed since. Leaving out the two that work only for their own group, 33 were in date and able to issue clearance certificates.

How do I check an inspection authority?
Ask for the approval certificate and check three things against the Department’s list: the company name, that the Asbestos Abatement Regulations are in its scope with regulation 22 for clearance, and that the approval has not expired. It should be a separate company from the contractor doing the removal.
Do I have to find the AIA myself?
The regulations make the asbestos client responsible for appointing it in writing.
