Asbestos removal in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal
Asbestos roof removal in Durban is priced at our Gauteng rate of R150 to R250 per m², and transport to the nearest licensed landfill is quoted after the site visit. From Durban that is Shongweni, inland near Hillcrest, or KwaDukuza on the North Coast.
KwaZulu-Natal is one of only four provinces with landfills that may lawfully take asbestos. Removing 10 m² or more of asbestos cement needs a contractor registered with the Department of Employment and Labour, and the clearance certificate comes from an approved inspection authority. We take on asbestos roof, ceiling, pipe and cladding jobs across eThekwini and the rest of KwaZulu-Natal; the full breakdown is in what asbestos roof removal costs.

Where does asbestos from Durban go?
Asbestos waste may only go to a Class A landfill, or a Class B landfill the environmental authority has specifically approved for it. Two sites in KwaZulu-Natal qualify:
- Shongweni, near Hillcrest: EnviroServ’s Class A landfill west of Durban. A July 2025 licence audit found it compliant and operating.
- KwaDukuza (Stanger): a Class A (H:H) landfill run by Dolphin Coast Landfill Management, whose operator says it accepts all types of waste.
Whether a site takes a load on a given day is the operator’s call, so we book it before the job and bring back a document from the disposal site for all the asbestos waste, as regulation 21 of the Asbestos Abatement Regulations, 2020 requires. The evidence for both sites, and the rest of the country’s, is on where to dispose of asbestos in South Africa.
Never put asbestos out with household refuse or builder’s rubble, and don’t take it to a general-waste site: none of them is licensed for it.
How is asbestos removed in Durban?
The same way as anywhere in South Africa. A registered contractor gives the Department of Employment and Labour seven days’ written notice, works to a written plan of work, wets the sheets and takes them down whole, and wraps them on the roof. An approved inspection authority tests the air and issues the clearance certificate before anyone else goes back in. See how asbestos roof removal works, step by step.
KwaZulu-Natal had five approved inspection authorities able to issue asbestos clearance certificates on 12 October 2026, by the first address on the Department’s list. The full list.

KwaZulu-Natal has done more on asbestos roofs than any other province: by the Minister’s figures, more than the next three provinces combined. Most of it is government housing; private homes, schools and factories are up to their owners. The province has said it cannot afford to replace every asbestos roof, and in 2021 residents of Ward 47, which includes parts of KwaMashu and Bester, were still asking for theirs to be dealt with (The Mercury, July 2021).
What does asbestos removal cost in Durban?
Our published band of R150 to R250 per m² to strip and dispose is Gauteng pricing; we don’t publish a separate Durban figure. A Durban roof is priced on the same per-m² basis, with transport to Shongweni or KwaDukuza quoted after the site visit as its own line. The new roof is priced separately.
The quote tool works on any KwaZulu-Natal address: type it in, outline the roof, and the figure on screen is the Gauteng band before transport. See asbestos roof removal cost for what a compliant quote must include, or replacement cost for removal plus a new roof.
Check the registration before you sign
A corrugated asbestos roof is Type 2 work, which only a contractor registered with the Department of Employment and Labour may do. Some contractors' registrations run out on 21 March 2027, so check the expiry date before you sign. Every registered name and expiry date is on the list of registered asbestos contractors in South Africa.
Roofs are only part of it: asbestos-cement water pipes, gutters, ceiling boards and wall cladding are common in older KwaZulu-Natal buildings too. Asbestos removal by material explains which type of registration each needs, and asbestos ceiling boards covers the ceilings.
