Where does asbestos from George go?
Out of the region. Mossel Bay municipality told its council in 2026 that no waste site in the Garden Route is accredited for asbestos and that the nearest are in Cape Town and Gqeberha, which makes disposal costly (mayoral committee report). By road, George is roughly 330 km from Aloes in Gqeberha and about 430 km from Vissershok in Cape Town.
The regional landfill the Garden Route District Municipality is building outside Mossel Bay, next to PetroSA, may change that. The district said in September 2026 that its first two cells are Class B cells, which can also take asbestos, and that Cell 1A was still being built (Garden Route DM). Under the national norms a Class B site needs the environmental authority’s specific approval before it may take asbestos, so until it opens and is approved, the waste keeps travelling.

How many asbestos roofs are there in Mossel Bay?
Mossel Bay counted about 2,772 government-subsidised units built before 1990 with asbestos roofs, most of them in Dalmeida (about 1,000), KwaNonqaba (948) and Great Brak River (450), and costed replacing them at about R55,000 each, R152 million in all. There was no provincial or national programme to pay for it, and the report said a door-to-door survey was needed to confirm the numbers.
When the municipality ran asbestos disposal open days in October 2022, residents paid for removal, an appointed contractor sealed and removed the asbestos, and it was taken to a landfill in Gqeberha (Mossel Bay Advertiser).

What does asbestos removal cost in George?
Our published band of R150 to R250 per m² to strip and dispose is Gauteng pricing, where the landfill is close. In the Garden Route the roof is priced on the same per-m² basis, and transport to Gqeberha or Cape Town is quoted after the site visit as its own line. For a single house that line is a real share of the bill, so ask for it in writing. For comparison, Mossel Bay’s own costing came to about R55,000 per house for removal and a new roof in 2026.

Possibly. The Garden Route District Municipality says its first cells are Class B cells, which can also take asbestos, but Cell 1A was still under construction in September 2026, and a Class B site needs specific approval to take asbestos.
