Asbestos removal in every province
All nine provinces, the landfill each one uses, and how a job far from one is priced.
We take on asbestos removal jobs across South Africa: roofs, ceilings, pipes, gutters and cladding. The rules are the same in every province: a contractor registered with the Department of Employment and Labour, seven days’ notice, a plan of work and a clearance certificate. What changes from place to place is the trip to a landfill licensed for asbestos, because we found them in only four provinces.

How is a job outside Gauteng priced?
Our published band, R150 to R250 per m² to strip and dispose, is Gauteng pricing, where Holfontein is close by. Everywhere else the roof is priced on the same per-m² basis, and transport to the nearest licensed landfill is quoted after the site visit as its own line. The new roof is priced separately.
Asbestos cement is heavy, roughly 15 kg per m² of roof sheeting, so a 150 m² house roof is more than two tonnes of sealed waste. In Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and around Durban the landfill is nearby; from George, Bloemfontein, Polokwane or Mbombela it is hundreds of kilometres away. Which provinces have no asbestos landfill?
We found no public landfill licensed for asbestos in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Free State, North West or the Northern Cape. Waste from there goes to a licensed site in another province, usually Holfontein or Vlakfontein in Gauteng; from the Northern Cape’s west coast, Vissershok in Cape Town is about 700 km away.
Those provinces still have plenty of asbestos to deal with. The Free State says about 33,000 asbestos roofs remain, at about R4 billion, and a 2015 Northern Cape assessment counted 31,744 structures with asbestos. Limpopo had dealt with 2,937 government houses by September 2026.

Do you do asbestos removal outside Gauteng?
Yes, in all nine provinces. The work follows the same national rules everywhere; outside Gauteng, transport to the nearest licensed landfill is quoted after the site visit as its own line.
Which provinces have a landfill for asbestos?
Gauteng (Holfontein and Vlakfontein), KwaZulu-Natal (Shongweni and KwaDukuza), the Eastern Cape (Aloes in Gqeberha) and the Western Cape (Vissershok in Cape Town). We found none in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Free State, North West or the Northern Cape.
